A microfinance loan enables the poor to reap the benefits of their own hard work, and create a sustainable source of revenue for themselves and their family.

Microfinance borrowers prefer loans to a charitable handout, because they understand that by repaying the loan, they are creating a credit history that will enable them to access larger loans in the future.

What is the demand for Microfinance?
It is estimated that at least 1.5 billion people or half of the total 3 billion working poor in the world are in need of micro-loans of some kind. Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), however, serve just a little over 100 million working poor. Thus, the potential demand for microfinance is exponentially larger than the population already served by microfinance institutions.

A growing number of Canadians are now broadening their charitable efforts while they travel in the hope of making deeper connections with the causes they support. “Philanthropic Travel,” as it is known, is a way to see the world and make it a better place, by adopting causes abroad.

“We’re certainly starting to get more questions about philanthropic tourism,” says Marnie Grona, Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications with Imagine Canada, a national program to promote charitable giving and volunteering.

A growing number of philanthropists recognize they can make a more lasting impact with a direct contribution to humanitarian causes, suggests David Chamberlain, founder of Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel.

Chamberlain is a Nevada-based travel philanthropy consultant known for introducing potential donors to non-government organizations (NGOs) around the world. “Not everyone wants to pick up a hammer when on vacation,’ he says, and most grassroots developing world NGO causes need money, not non-skilled helpers.”

Chamberlain arranges introductions for his travellers to leaders of outreach projects around the globe to establish relationships, build trust and offer a firsthand look at where philanthropy is most needed. Making it Real
One advisory firm in Alamo, California has developed a model to do just that. Randy Manley and Scott Miller, the principals of Lodestar Private Asset Management, established the “Make It Real Foundation” in 2008 to take their philanthropic endeavors to a higher level and create stronger bonds with their clients.

The mission of the Make It Real Foundation (MIRF)is twofold: to provide advisors and their clients the opportunity to embrace a giving experience through direct interactions with the beneficiaries of the charitable gifts, and, to better understand the beneficiaries’ situation through education and positive exposure to the culture of the area in need.

“Anyone with $10,000 can open a donor advised account, but we were looking for ways to give back and also strengthen our relationships with clients,” explained Randy. They pursued the philanthropic travel experience model in which the advisors and their clients travelled to the area where their contributions would be utilized. Randy and Scott introduced the idea to clients and received a very positive response; even as the economy slipped into recession.

Despite daunting headwinds, MIRF enthusiastically undertook its first annual philanthropic experience in June 2009 planned by David Chamberlain at Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel.

Having raised $20,000, nine travelers embarked on a journey to the Appalachian region in the U.S. Scott explained their choice, “Here in our own country is an area where people have struggled for generations in a failed economy, primarily based on coal. Severe poverty, lack of education, poor healthcare and a damaged ecosystem have robbed the youth of Appalachia of hope.”

Although they passed up more exotic locations, “I loved the chance to see a part of the world I would not normally visit and to learn about its local culture and history, to forge new relationships, and to make a contribution that will have a meaningful and lasting impact” said Randy. “To share the experience with clients greatly improved and deepened our relationship.”

Their second philanthropic venture, scheduled for October 2010, involves a trip to Cambodia. Randy and Scott are raising funds for the Somaly Mam Foundation, an organization whose vision is a world where women and children are safe from slavery and human trafficking. The group will also see how microfinance programs have helped some of the victims establish themselves as self-sufficient, proudly independent businesswomen.

The cultural part of the trip will be very rich, with visits to historical sites like Angkor Wat, a boat-cruise down the Mekong River and a relaxing stay on the beaches of Thailand.
