Creating Deeper (personally & financially generous and transformative) Philanthropic Relationships: A Historical Perspective

IN THE BEGINNING
1. The Wisdom of Stone Soup = PERSONAL REALITY
2. Checkbook Charity = VIRTUAL REALITY

BACK TO THE FUTURE:
PHILANTHROPY 2.0 = PERSONAL REALITY?

“When we act in ways that confirm our ideals, we make the ideal our reality.”

Exquisite Safaris is a pioneer in Philanthropic Travel -our mission is to include philanthropic intent, inspiration, education & empowerment into every luxury travel experience we create.

We believe that international travel should enlighten and enrich both traveler and host, while serving as a bridge over which passes friendship, peace, ancient wisdom, technological innovation and economic sustainability.

Greenwashing to Causewashing
Historically, the worldwide travel industry has generated large profits and delivered culturally insulated travel experiences while ignoring the welfare of the local communities their clients visit.

Those greedy corporate practices excluded economically challenged communities from sharing a reasonable amount of the prosperity created when travelers visit their World Heritage Sites, enjoy their culture and recreate in their unique environments.

Quiz your Travel Provider
“Please support the travel industry’s rush to embrace the marketing value of Philanthropic Travel by gently reminding them to increase their commitments to community in at least direct proportion to their marketing campaign budgets.

Today, there are old line travel companies announcing their philanthropic programs and advertising a token ‘giving back,’ trip (of the year) or new companies donating to charity if you sign up by X date -just so they can market to you.

Buy the Change you Wish to See in the World
Defining and demanding the full potential of philanthropic travel lies quietly in the hands of you -the enlightened consumer.

Exquisite Safaris donates $250 per traveler and your loose change..

“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito.” -Anita Roddick

Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel and United Prosperity have agreed to leverage transformational philanthropic travel in India and beyond, connecting traveler donors and host beneficiaries eager to become successful entrepreneurs.

United Prosperity is a non-profit organization that helps us combat extreme global poverty powerfully by multiplying the impact of our money through loan guarantees. They are the world’s first person to person loan guaranteeing website.

There are small entrepreneurs all over the world who cannot afford to start and grow their business alone. Expanding their business may be the only means to adequately feeding their family or sending their children to school. However, banks do not lend to them without collateral, and that’s where philanthropic travelers come in!

Philanthropic travelers can become compassionate social guarantors with United Prosperity by providing an interest-free cash collateral or guarantee for an entrepreneur on UnitedProsperity.org. No minimum amount is required, and you are able to choose which entrepreneurs you would like to support.

United Prosperity maximizes the impact of our donations:
For every $1 we put toward a guarantee, UP will allow nearly $2 or more in microloan to the entrepreneur from local banks either directly or through our partners. Better yet, UP will be able to track our chosen entrepreneur’s progress, and when they repay their loan, we will be repaid in full!

At that point we will have the opportunity to support another entrepreneur.

What is Microfinance?
Microfinance is the most powerful tool we have identified to help the very poor, those living below $1 a day, rise above poverty with dignity.

Most commonly, it involves making small loans to poor women to enable them to start and grow businesses. The additional income from the business helps a poor family to buy food, access basic healthcare, educate their children, save a little and work towards a better future. Many of them, in due course, pull themselves out of poverty. Microfinance is one of the poverty alleviation mechanisms that the United Nations Millennium Development Project has adopted to meet its goal to eradicate poverty.

Wouldn’t the poor rather have a donation than a loan?
Maintaining human dignity is at the core of microfinance. The poor are poor not because they are lazy or incapable of hard work -they are poor because social and economic conditions make it virtually impossible for them to escape poverty. Most poor people work very hard merely to survive. They are entirely at the mercy of moneylenders who charge usurious interest rates that ensure that the poor keep coming back to them. A microfinance loan enables the poor to reap the benefits of their own hard work, and create a sustainable source of revenue for themselves and their family.

Microfinance borrowers prefer loans to a charitable handout, because they understand that by repaying the loan, they are creating a credit history that will enable them to access larger loans in the future.

What is the demand for Microfinance?
It is estimated that at least 1.5 billion people or half of the total 3 billion working poor in the world are in need of micro-loans of some kind. Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), however, serve just a little over 100 million working poor. Thus, the potential demand for microfinance is exponentially larger than the population already served by microfinance institutions.

Personal Transformation, Wealth & Wisdom
There are many components to a charitable giving strategy, from donating money to causes we believe in to volunteering our time to setting up a private giving foundation to create a lasting legacy of giving.

A growing number of Canadians are now broadening their charitable efforts while they travel in the hope of making deeper connections with the causes they support. “Philanthropic Travel,” as it is known, is a way to see the world and make it a better place, by adopting causes abroad.

“We’re certainly starting to get more questions about philanthropic tourism,” says Marnie Grona, Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications with Imagine Canada, a national program to promote charitable giving and volunteering.

A growing number of philanthropists recognize they can make a more lasting impact with a direct contribution to humanitarian causes, suggests David Chamberlain, founder of Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel.

Chamberlain is a Nevada-based travel philanthropy consultant known for introducing potential donors to non-government organizations (NGOs) around the world. “Not everyone wants to pick up a hammer when on vacation,’ he says, and most grassroots developing world NGO causes need money, not non-skilled helpers.”

Chamberlain arranges introductions for his travellers to leaders of outreach projects around the globe to establish relationships, build trust and offer a firsthand look at where philanthropy is most needed. Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel makes a $250 per person donation to the grassroots organization being visited. Their clients donate generously too.

Every marketing guru in our financial services industry asks, “What makes you and your firm different?” This is a great question to ask in any economic environment, but it is particularly important today. Are you looking for a way to solidify your client relationships? Would you like to differentiate your firm from the competition?

Making it Real
One advisory firm in Alamo, California has developed a model to do just that. Randy Manley and Scott Miller, the principals of Lodestar Private Asset Management, established the “Make It Real Foundation” in 2008 to take their philanthropic endeavors to a higher level and create stronger bonds with their clients.

The mission of the Make It Real Foundation (MIRF)is twofold: to provide advisors and their clients the opportunity to embrace a giving experience through direct interactions with the beneficiaries of the charitable gifts, and, to better understand the beneficiaries’ situation through education and positive exposure to the culture of the area in need.

“Anyone with $10,000 can open a donor advised account, but we were looking for ways to give back and also strengthen our relationships with clients,” explained Randy. They pursued the philanthropic travel experience model in which the advisors and their clients travelled to the area where their contributions would be utilized. Randy and Scott introduced the idea to clients and received a very positive response; even as the economy slipped into recession.

Despite daunting headwinds, MIRF enthusiastically undertook its first annual philanthropic experience in June 2009 planned by David Chamberlain at Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel.

Having raised $20,000, nine travelers embarked on a journey to the Appalachian region in the U.S. Scott explained their choice, “Here in our own country is an area where people have struggled for generations in a failed economy, primarily based on coal. Severe poverty, lack of education, poor healthcare and a damaged ecosystem have robbed the youth of Appalachia of hope.”

Although they passed up more exotic locations, “I loved the chance to see a part of the world I would not normally visit and to learn about its local culture and history, to forge new relationships, and to make a contribution that will have a meaningful and lasting impact” said Randy. “To share the experience with clients greatly improved and deepened our relationship.”

Their second philanthropic venture, scheduled for October 2010, involves a trip to Cambodia. Randy and Scott are raising funds for the Somaly Mam Foundation, an organization whose vision is a world where women and children are safe from slavery and human trafficking. The group will also see how microfinance programs have helped some of the victims establish themselves as self-sufficient, proudly independent businesswomen.

The cultural part of the trip will be very rich, with visits to historical sites like Angkor Wat, a boat-cruise down the Mekong River and a relaxing stay on the beaches of Thailand.

To streamline logistics, Randy and Scott have again partnered with Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel for assistance with their charitable operations and their travel and philanthropic planning.

Both Randy and Scott agree that, “If you enjoy travel and philanthropic intent is high on your list, or high on the list of your clients, then this could be a break-through experience for you, your clients and for your firm.” -Eric Flett
